Phillip Island Superbikes 2012 - Historics Report
One month after the Island Classic, Beau Beaton and the Irving Vincent returned to the Phillip Island Circuit for two support races of the World Superbikes. Beau eclipsed his previous best lap time of 1.39.412 with an impressive 1.38.004. Beau’s result in both races was third place behind Steve Martin and Shawn Giles (on the two Rocketship Suzuki Katanas).
The interesting thing here is that Gilesy’s time was 1.37.370 and Steve’s was 1.38.194, which is quite amazing considering the experience of these two riders. Steve Martin is the 2009 World Endurance Champion for YART (Yamaha Austria Racing Team), but is a veteran of the World Superbike Championship, and former champion of the Australian series. Giles is the only rider in the 22-year history of the Australian Superbike Championship to win three consecutive championships (2000-2002). Other career highlights include the Australian Supersport Championship (1997) and the Australian Superbike Series title (1995).
It should be noted that the current MotoGP lap record is 1.30.059 (Nicky Hayden 5th Oct 2008) and the current Superbike lap record is 1.31.826 (Troy Corser 4th Mar 2007).
Well done Beau, the 1.36’s are coming!!!
